HP Printers - Printer is Offline or Not Responding (Mac) This document applies to all HP printers and computers with macOS and OS X. The printer status is offline or The printer is not responding displays when attempting to print.
- Connect the printer to the USB port and switch it on in advance.
- Printing with USB 2.0 is supported under Mac OS X 10.3.3 and later versions.
- On the [Apple] menu, click [System Preferences...], and then click the [Print & Fax] in the [System Preferences] dialog box.The [Print & Fax] appears.Under Mac OS X 10.3.x - 10.4.x, double-click the Printer Setup Utility icon in the [Utilities] folder in the [Applications] folder.The [Printer List] appears.
- From the list of printers, select a printer that is automatically recognized by plug-and-play, and then delete it. Click [].The confirmation screen appears.
- Click [OK].
- Click [].The add printer screen appears.Under Mac OS X 10.3.x - 10.4.x, click [Add Printer...] on the [Printers] menu or [Add] on the toolbar.The [Printer Browser] appears.
- On the add printer screen, click [Default], and then make sure [Kind] is set to [USB].The name of the printer connected to the USB port appears.Under Mac OS X 10.3.x - 10.4.x, make sure [Connection] is set to [USB].
- Select the name of the printer you want to use.
- Make sure the product name appears in the [Printer Name] field, and then click [Add].
- If you want to use the bypass tray, select options in the [Installable Options] dialog box, and then select [Continue].
- The name of the registered printer appears in [Print & Fax].Under Mac OS X 10.3.x - 10.4.x, the name of the registered printer appears in [Printer List].
- On the [System Preferences] menu, click [Quit System Preferences].The [System Preferences] closes.Under Mac OS X 10.3.x - 10.4.x, click [Quit Printer Setup Utility] on the [Printer Setup Utility] menu.The [Printer Setup Utility] closes.
- If you use a printer that has been automatically recognized by plug-and-play, the driver screens may be displayed in English due to the specifications of the Mac OS X. To display the driver screens properly, delete the printer once from the list of printers.
- To make fine adjustments to print quality, set [Adjust Color Density...] before using the printer.

You've no need to muck about with printer drivers and software if you've got an Apple device and a printer that supports AirPrint (chances are you do) — with AirPrint you can connect to and print from your printer so long as both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
How to connect an AirPrint printer to your Mac
Because AirPrint works over Wi-Fi, you need to make sure your printer is connected to your Wi-Fi network before proceeding. Your printer will come with step-by-step instructions for connecting the device to your home Wi-Fi network — follow those steps first.
- Make sure your Mac is connected to your Wi-Fi network.
- Make sure your printer is connected to your Wi-Fi network.
- Use the keyboard shortcut Command + P or choose File » Print from the Mac's menu bar.
- Look at the Printer dropdown in the Print menu dialog. If it shows the name of your printer, you're good to go!
- If it doesn't show the name of your printer, click the dropdown menu and look for your printer's name.
- If the printer still isn't showing up, click Add Printer…
- You'll see a menu appear. Look for your printer's name on the list and select it.
- Make sure the Use: dropdown menu is set to AirPrint.
- Click Add to add your printer.
- You're good to go! All that's left is to Print from your new AirPrint printer!
Troubleshooting
If you run into any trouble whilst setting up your AirPrint printer, there are a few things you can try!
- Make sure you're running the latest version of macOS on your Mac and iOS on your iOS devices.
- Make sure your printer is updated to the latest software and firmware. Check your printer's user guide for information on updating your printer firmware.
- If you've got your printer connected to your Mac or to your network via USB, you're not going to be able to use AirPrint. You can't have your AirPrint and
